The island of Zlarin is often referred to as the golden island, green island or coral island.
It is separated from the land by the St. Ante Channel, where the regular ship lane Šibenik-Zlarin sails every day.
With the area of 8.19 km2, Zlarin is the third biggest island in the Šibenik archipelago. On the island you can enjoy the beautiful sandy beaches and pieceful surroundings.
The first records of coral diving in The Adriatic Sea go back to the 13th century, and in 1412 the people from Zlarin are referred to as the well-known coral divers. At that time the people from Zlarin went coral diving and they sold unfinished rough corals in Naples and Sicily.
After 1797, when this region was no longer under the rule of Venice, Venice still continued to control the coral diving. Hovever, the people from Zlarin had an exclusive right to dive corals. So they went coral diving and sold it until 1955, when this practice came to an end due to the fact that the corals dived on the occasion when they had most success were sold in Italy for next to nothing. Soon after that, and after they went coral diving to Egypt and had no success, the coral divers cooperative of Zlarin ceased to exist. Since then, Viktor Lukin, a coral diver from Zlarin, has continued to work on corals and has been selling it in the coral workshop «Viktor». A few years ago a coral diving centre «Zlarinka» was opened.
Thanks to corals Zlarin was the first tourist place in the region which had its own tourist brochure.
